Seven Assistive Technology Gifts Ideas for the Holidays!

Wrapped presents

Can you believe it? The holiday season is upon us again! To keep up with our tradition, we released our first gift guide last year and here are our favourite assistive technology gifts this year!

Nest Thermostat

Are you looking for that gift that enables you or anyone in your household to control the temperature in the deep cold winters or the hot summers using a smart phone? Then the thermostat is the perfect item for you to use along with the Tecla Shield from last year’s holiday gift guide. Ever since our family set it up, it has allowed me to turn up the heat when I needed it most, especially when my legs often get cold during the winter. It’s easy to install, has a web platform you can log in to control as well on your computer and is compatible with both Apple iOS and Android for your smart phones.

Logitech Harmony Hub

Another awesome gift as part of the smart home to enable someone, this can control any entertainment device in your home! The Logitech Harmony Hub is also another complimentary device if you have a Tecla Shield as noted in the gift guide last year. I use the hub to control my home entertainment system which includes a Westinghouse TV, Bell PVR, and Logitech speakers with my smart phone. Since I love watching TV, the hub has given me a sense of freedom to change channels and record shows without relying on others. The hub is compatible on both Apple iOS and Android.

Kobo eReader

Are you or someone your gifting for a book lover? Then the Kobo eReader is the item. This was selected by our team member Alexis, who is now able to read a book much easier mainly because of the font size and the type of screen eReaders like Kobo uses. eReaders are a great alternative to books, especially if the person you are gifting to has trouble turning pages; the Kobo eReader is lightweight and just requires a click of a button to turn the page.

This would make a great stocking stuffer! Several of our team members at Enables Me use this. There are several brands, but the E–Z Reacher is an ideal gift for you or your loved one who may need to reach for items that have fallen on the floor or  high up on a shelf without relying on someone else.

SENSIMAT

If you are someone that sits in a wheelchair for long durations and is concerns about getting pressure sores, SENSIMAT is for you! It’s non-evasive, and sits beneath your cushion, has a web platform or Apple iOS and Android app to track and notify you to shift yourself! Our very own Alexis tried this out for several weeks and wrote a review on this product recently.

Bibs

Are you a messy eater? Several of our team members including myself use this too. The bib is a great investment, especially for a person with limited upper body strength and often require someone to help with feeding. Not sure if this is the most appropriate gift or stocking stuffer, but definitely something to purchase for yourself with all the holiday parties coming up!

This is perfect when you over eat and drink too much over the holidays! Again not the most appropriate gift or stocking stuffer but definitely good to have over the holidays with all the parties. 🙂

  1. Food Shelter Clothing – all basic needs. I for one would not mind a Bib or E-Z Reach! Hint! Hint!! I got an E-Z Reach like product for $4 at Dollarama. Main downside is that it is rigid and will not fold.
