Enables Me Live!

As a continuation of our first Enables Me Live! speaker series, we will be hosting our next event in the beautiful Town of Georgina. Keep Calm and Roll-On Enabling Georgina will be bringing the community of Georgina together to share the stories and progress of accessibility through the speaker series and as well of activities that would provide participants with a lived experience.

The Enables Me Live! speaker series brings the question, “What enables individuals with accessibility needs?” to a live audience. This is an opportunity for us to listen and converse about the experiences, stories and news on how the arts, fashion, people, technology, travel, and work are enabling individuals with accessibility needs; and a way to share the many perspectives and new insight.

The event will be emceed by CJRU Access Files radio host, Mitch Stark.

Heather Cairns-Mills

Heather Cairns-Mills is Founder of Walk It Off Spinal Cord Recovery and Wellness Centre She is the Founder and President of Walk It Off Spinal Cord Wellness Centre Inc. In 1994, received BA in Psychology from York University, and spent 3 years studying physical education. She earned the Certificate in Ambulance and Emergency Care from Centennial College in 1995 and later received her Provincial Advance Care Paramedic Certificate. As a paramedic, she had the opportunity to work for 14 years throughout the province in Simcoe County, Halton/Mississauga and with Toronto Emergency Medical Service (TEMS). While she worked for TEMS, she assisted in spearheading the Canadian Window Balcony Fall Prevention project with the EMS Chiefs of Canada. Her experience includes supervising the Toronto Heat Alert Paramedic Program. During a family wedding in Cuba in 2009, her husband Kevin Mills sustained a spinal cord injury when a wave drove his head first into the sand. She left EMS to be her husband’s primary caregiver. This tragedy has given her both a personal insight and the understanding of the extensive medical requirements of living with someone with a Spinal Cord Injury. They have learned through their experiences that one must seek out and strive to provide the best care possible for loved ones. They found that care at an SCI Recovery Centre in California called Project Walk. They felt this specialized program style should be available to their community and so began the process of building their unique not-for-profit SCI recovery centre, serving the province of Ontario and beyond. As a result of the hard work of family, friends and the community, they raised the funds and opened the doors to Walk It Off Spinal Cord Wellness Centre Inc. on January 21, 2012. During their four years of operation, they have expanded their practice and now work with many individuals with various neurological disorders.
